Her closest neighbour is a lady in her seventies and the hottest night-spot is the pub three-quarters of a mile away. The closest she’s come to being swept off her feet was a drink with a lonely Welsh farmer with an indecipherable accent and a passion for dominoes. Country life in the 21st century is not, it would seem, all cowshed clinches with saucy stable boys – in fact it is quite the opposite.

When your livelihood depends upon shovelling horse manure, early mornings and wellington boots, and your weekly trip to the village shop counts as a social life then it’s no great surprise that meeting that special someone is difficult. The programme, starting tonight, 6. In the picturesque highland village of Gairloch there is a severe shortage of eligible men.

Archive materials are often fragile and require specialist enclosures and environmental conditions to help reduce rates of deterioration and ensure that they are preserved for the long-term. These materials were too old and their media too outmoded to form any meaningful part of a traditional library collection. That these materials were kept for so long is a clear sign of their value. It was obvious that this situation could no longer continue.

In , we began work on our archive collections. This involved a basic listing of the oldest and potentially most vulnerable materials and carrying out research into their origins. We continue to carry out work to arrange and catalogue our collections to make them more widely accessible. To identify, preserve and make accessible institutional records of SRUC and its predecessors which document its history, achievements and contribute to its sense of identity.

In future, we hope to develop archival collections which support the teaching and research needs of SRUC, as well as those of the agricultural and scientific community more widely. In addition, we will look to build our collection relating to agriculture and rural life in Scotland throughout history. Promote and make accessible the records held by SRUC archives. Arrange, describe and create appropriate finding aids to improve accessibility.

The history of agriculture in Scotland includes all forms of farm production in the modern boundaries of Scotland, from the prehistoric era to the present day. Scotland’s good arable and pastoral land is found mostly in the south and east of the country. Heavy rainfall, wind and salt spray, in combination with thin soil and overgrazing , made most of the western islands treeless. The terrain often made internal land communication difficult, encouraging a coastal network.

In the Neolithic period, from around 6, years ago, there is evidence of permanent settlements and farming. The two main sources of food were grain and cow milk. From the Bronze Age , arable land spread at the expense of forest. From the Iron Age , there were hill forts in southern Scotland associated with cultivation ridges and terraces and the fertile plains were already densely exploited for agriculture. During the period of Roman occupation of Britain there was re-growth of trees indicating a reduction in agriculture.
